Dr. Harold Koplewicz, a world-renowned child psychiatrist and founding member of the non-profit Child Mind Institute, will discuss his new book The Scaffold Effect.

Dr. Koplewicz introduces the powerful and clinically tested idea that the deliberate buildup and then gradual loosening of parental support (like scaffolding on a building) is the single most effective way to encourage kids to climb higher, try new things, grow from mistakes, and develop character and strength.

Drawing on Dr. Koplewicz’s decades of clinical and personal experience, this book is a compassionate, street-smart, and essential guide for the ages.

Dr. Gwen Lopez-Cohen trained at the NYU School of Medicine and graduated with honors in physiology and neuroscience. She completed her psychiatry and child psychiatry residencies at NYU/Bellevue Hospital center. Dr. Gwen then completed an advanced residency in community psychiatry at the Yale Child Study Center and the CT Mental Health Center. She is trained in all aspects of the practice of psychiatry including psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, parent child interaction training, and psychopharmacology.

Dr. Gwen worked at the Yale Child Study Center as a clinician on a clinical trial of medications for children with autism, and as the medical director at the Bridgeport Juvenille Detention center. She served as a consultant to young adults with Asperger’s syndrome at the Chapel Haven residential program. In 2012 Dr. Gwen opened her private practice in Westport, CT. Dr. Gwen continues to serve as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Yale Child Study center while devoting herself to full time clinical practice in Westport, CT.
